PRESS RELEASE FROM THE JACKSON POLICE DEPARTMENT:

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Kwesi Addison, had outstanding warrants through Madison County for Felony Probation Violation and Felony Sex Offender Registry Violations.
Upon arriving in the 100 block of Lee Street, Jackson Police officers observed Addison, who immediately fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, Addison retrieved a handgun from his waistband and ultimately barricaded himself inside an outdoor shed structure.
Officers quickly established a perimeter and issued multiple commands for Addison to surrender. Due to the nature of the charges and the fact that Addison was armed, the Jackson Police Department Negotiation Team and SWAT Team were activated and responded to the scene.
Negotiators made several attempts to engage Addison in conversation over the course of several hours, however, he refused to communicate.
After continued refusal to surrender, and to ensure the safety of all involved, SWAT officers deployed non-flammable/non-incendiary tear gas into the outer doorway of the shed. At the time of deployment, Addison was located in a separate room within the structure.
Shortly thereafter, a fire was observed in the room where Addison was barricaded. Addison exited the shed a short time later and was taken into custody without further incident. Given the nature of the fire and the damage it caused, the Jackson Fire Department is actively investigating its cause.
Addison was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation, where he was treated and released later that evening.
He is currently being held at the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
