Garage burns amid barricade situation, police, fire officials investigate scene
UPDATE: Barricaded suspect taken into custody after standoff on Lee Street
JACKSON, Tenn. — We have a follow up to the barricade situation in the 100 block of Lee Street in Jackson that we brought you Tuesday night.
Around 9 Tuesday night, our crews arrived and saw special units from the Jackson Police Department and EMS personnel on scene.
Jackson Police said they were assisting the Tennessee Department of Corrections with the apprehension of a wanted individual.
The individual barricaded themselves inside a garage on the property. Police fired CS cans inside the garage while trying to get the man to come out.
At some point during the apprehension attempt, the garage caught fire, and according to the property owner, Dustin Ring, owner of Dustin Buys Houses, the garage is a total loss. But that’s not all that was lost in the fire.
Ring said he is renting the home to a couple, and the man renting the home works in construction and the wife is disabled. He said the renter lost all of his work equipment in the garage when it burned. Ring said the renters were good people and he wanted to help them. He has offered the couple free rent for a month and has set up a GoFundMe account to help the renter buy more equipment so he can get back to work.
Fire officials were on the scene Wednesday investigating the fire.
We reached out to the Jackson Police Department regarding how they handle situations when property damage happens during an attempt to apprehend an individual. We are waiting to hear back regarding their policy and procedures.
We have also reached out to the Tennessee Department of Corrections regarding the incident and have not heard back from them.
No further details, including the identity of the individual involved, have been confirmed by authorities at this time.
