Keeping it cool during holiday heat
INFORMATION PROVIDED BY OHIO STATE WEXNER MEDICAL CENTER
The July 4th holiday weekend is known for time spent with family and celebrating with friends but it’s also a great time to get outdoors. But with the extreme heat saturating most of the south right now, it’s always a good idea to heed caution when spending too much time outdoors.
Experts from Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center suggest following a few guidelines so that those backyard BBQs do not turn into emergency room visits.
A few tips to help keep your cool in the extreme heat:
- Always remain aware of the weather forecast, especially heat watches or warnings.
- Drinking plenty of fluids is a must! Aim for cool (not cold) water as a great choice to stay hydrated. It is also recommended to get plenty of electrolytes. Drinks like low-sugar sports drink are good options.
- Stay aware of how you feel. Watch for symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. If you experience any unusual symptoms of heat related illnesses, try to get out of the heat and get water or use cold towels to cool down.
Holidays are always much more fun without a visit to the hospital. So take care of yourself and watch out for signs of heat illnesses with your friends and loved ones as well.
