Shiloh celebrates Independence Day with a BOOM!
SHILOH, Tenn.—Loud booms could be heard at Shiloh National Military Park Sunday, but not from fireworks!
Shiloh is celebrating Independence Day all weekend long with activities filled with both rich history and of course, cannon firings.
Sunday, Shiloh is concluding its “Booming for Independence” program. The park has been busy all weekend long with visitors checking out the multiple cannon firings.
Each firing program was 20 minutes long and Sunday’s demonstrations were held at 11 in the morning, and again at 1 and 2:30 in the afternoon.
The weekend also featured two full days of living history. Living historians wearing period appropriate attire were on hand to tell visitors about procedures and tools used by both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.
“July 4th weekend we’ve been firing a Civil War cannon showing the people how they loaded, aimed, and fired the weapon. We show all the equipment that they used during the Civil War to fire these weapons and talked a little bit about how effective they were and how they were used in combat” said Chris Mekow, Park Ranger at Shiloh National Military Park.
The next event at Shiloh is the 92nd Anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps. That event includes a guided tour and will take place on Saturday, July 12 at 9am.
