The aptly named “Operation Hang Up” campaign aims to protect residents from fraudulent calls by providing tips to avoid becoming the next victim.
CCSD says there are 5 steps to know:
- Hang Up: If you receive a suspicious call demanding payment to avoid jail time, simply hang up.
- Don’t believe them: Scammers are skilled at creating fear. Remember, the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department will NEVER ask for payment over the phone.
- Don’t give them any money: Never send money or provide your bank or card details.
- Don’t put all your trust in caller ID: Scammers can manipulate caller ID to make it look like they’re calling from a legitimate source.
- Keep your private info PRIVATE: Never share personal or financial data with anyone you don’t trust.
Recently, there have been numerous scam calls where people use the CCSD’s actual phone number and make it appear in your caller ID to convince you it’s real.
CCSD says you should report any suspicious calls to local law enforcement.
