Local organizations share ways to help Texas flood victims

JACKSON, Tenn. — During times of tragedy — like the recent events in Texas — local communities often come together to provide relief. Although we are many miles from where disaster struck, there are still ways you can help.

Search and rescue crews in Texas have put in five days now of recovery efforts after the catastrophic flooding that happened in Kerr County over the Fourth of July holiday.

With the death toll rising, more than 100 people are confirmed dead after being swept away in the rushing floodwaters.

You may be wondering, “how can I help?”

We reached out to local charitable organizations, including The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

Both play significant roles in disaster relief, providing essential services like shelter, food, and medical assistance, and they provided feedback on how West Tennesseans can help during these hard times.

Both the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army are actively involved in providing relief to those affected by the Texas floods.

The Red Cross is focusing on providing shelter, distributing supplies, and offering emotional support.

A statement from the Tennessee region of the American Red Cross states “We are mobilizing local teams to travel to Texas to assist.” They say that in these types of situations, monetary donations are most helpful, allowing them to assess the need when they arrive and provide services such as feeding and sheltering.

The Salvation Army is serving meals, providing hydration, and offering emotional and spiritual care, mainly from local and surrounding units, according to Captain William Richardson with The Salvation Army of Jackson.

However, Captain Richardson said teams are ready if needed.

“So far, in the area The Salvation Army here has not been asked to reach out, but we are always ready,” said Captain Richardson. “We have EDS [emergency disaster] services always on standby ready to move at a moments notice.”
