Horizons camp underway at Freed-Hardeman University

HENDERSON, Tenn. — School is certainly not in session, however, Freed-Hardeman University is filled to the brim with well over a thousand people.

It is their yearly Horizons camp.

We were able to speak with a camper who has been attending for basically her entire life, who tells us why this week is so great.

“I think it is so fun, because there are a lot of new people you get to meet,” said camper Abigail Schwartz. “You get to make new relationships that you may not have gotten to have before. So it is pretty cool.”

With over a thousand campers staying in the dorms and running around the grounds of FHU, you have to have a lot of help. We were able to speak with one of the co-directors about who is here making this place run smoothly.

“We have youth ministers, we have preachers, we’ve got youth volunteers, we’ve got moms and dads, we’ve got Freed-Hardeman faculty and staff that also help out with Horizons,” said co-drector Jon David Schwartz.

It is not just West Tennesseans that are enjoying the camp this week. There are people from all over the country, including a large group from New York that are here just having a blast.

“The company, just being able to make friends from different states… Like, I’m from New York and I get to meet Christians from all over the country. We also have free time where we get to play basketball and play games and have fun,” said camper Jade Tintera.

Year after year, for over four decades now, Horizons keeps coming back to Freed-Hardeman University every single summer.

Each year, the whole campus is used. They stay in the dorms, go to class in the classrooms, have games in the gym, and all meet together in the auditorium.
