It’s almost time for back-to-school prep. Here are some resources to help get what you need

JACKSON, Tenn. — The school season is right around the corner and many families are getting a head start on securing school supplies.

We sought out to learn more about free giveaways and deals to help students get everything they need.

Back-to-school shopping can get expensive fast. But across West Tennessee, stores, nonprofits and community groups are stepping up with free giveaways and deep discounts to make sure every child walks into class prepared—no matter their budget.

One local nonprofit director reflects on what that struggle looked like in her own home.

“I just remember growing up and knowing how hard it was for my mom and other students to come and, you know, provide the things that were necessary. Growing up with that knowledge, it just motivated me to want to be able to give back and lessen that need and lessen that worry,” said Serenitie Newby, executive director for R.O.T.O. Nation.

At stores like Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, you can find notebooks, glue, and crayons for as low as $1. And at Walmart, many stores have exact school supply lists already posted—so families don’t waste a dime on what they don’t need.

Several back-to-school bashes are also happening this month in areas like Jackson, Milan, Humboldt and more. These giveaways range from free backpacks to free notebook paper and pencils.

“When you have back to school bashes and giveaways like this, you provide the students and the parents with the opportunity for that student to start school with confidence and they feel prepared and they’re ready to go. They don’t have to worry about feeling ashamed or embarrassed because they’re not prepared like other students,” said Newby.

No matter your budget, there are resources and deals right here in West Tennessee to help every student walk into class prepared.
