Black bear sightings confirmed in Hardin County. What officials are saying
HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — A local county has reported several black bear sightings recently.
Black bear sightings have been reported near the Savannah-Hardin County Airport.
“So over the weekend we started getting information from the public that we’ve had some bear sightings out in Hardin County. At first we were like ‘Maybe they’re just seeing a large dog or something along those lines,’ But it has been confirmed that we have seen a bear here in Hardin County,” said LaRae Smiley-Sliger, Hardin County EMA Director.
The reports have mostly been confined to the area near the intersection of state routes 128 and 226 south of Savannah.
If you encounter the bear, Hardin County EMA and TWRA strongly advise that you just take a picture and move on.
“We just encourage the public if you will leave it alone it probably will not bother you. If you just see them rambling through the pasture or rambling along the side of the road, take your pictures, move on and leave them alone,” said Larae.
BearWise is an educational organization founded and funded by state wildlife agencies.
They recommend these 6 tips to help bear-proof your property:
- Never feed or approach bears. Feeding teaches them to approach people for food.
- Secure garbage, food, and recycling as the smells can attract bears.
- Remove bird feeders. Birdseed is very calorie dense, which makes it an attractive meal for bears.
- Bring pet food inside. If this is unavoidable, feed smaller portions and pick up afterwards.
- Clean your grills and smokers, as these are smells the bears will find attractive.
- Lastly, inform your neighbors. Raising awareness protects the community.
Hardin County EMA is asking residents only call 9-1-1 to report bears that are showing signs of aggression.
