First Baptist Church Bemis unveils new 24-foot landmark

JACKSON, Tenn. — First Baptist Church of Bemis, a cornerstone of the Bemis community for more than a century, unveiled a new addition to the church grounds Friday morning: A 24-foot cross.

“Whenever you come across them railroad tracks and you see this cross standing up right here as soon as you enter Bemis, I think that says a lot about our community,” said Taylor Seay, church member. “It has always been a spirit-filled church. You walk in here and feel like home and family there’s just this overwhelming feeling.”

Founded in 1914, First Baptist Church of Bemis has been a spiritual home for many generations.

What makes this new landmark even more special is that all materials for the project were donated by church members and local businesses.

“We are very thankful that we have a loving fellowship here,” said Mary Spellings, church member.

The goal and prayer of the congregation is that the cross would not only be enjoyed by members, but also by the Bemis community. Now, that prayer has been answered.

“…I’m so proud of it. That’s why I am here so I can see it being raised. Anyone going up and down this street they are going to see this cross,” said Jackie Warren, church member.
