12-year-old girl tackles suspect, helps stop burglary

JUVENILE COMMENDED FOR BRAVERY IN FOILING BURGLARY ATTEMPT

CROCKETT COUNTY, TN – On July 17, 2025, at approximately 6:16 PM, an attempted burglary was halted thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of a 12-year-old girl and the support of community members.

The incident occurred on Johnson Grove Road when a white male, later identified as Robert W. Sills, attempted to break into a residence. Upon being spotted by the homeowners, Sills fled into a nearby soybean field. Demonstrating remarkable courage, the homeowners’ daughter pursued the suspect and tackled him, preventing his escape.

A motorist passing by witnessed the 12-year-old girl pursuing the would be burglar and stopped to assist, providing critical support in restraining the suspect. Additionally, a local farmer saw what was going on and provided zip ties that were used to secure Sills until Deputy Gilliland, Deputy Deason, Deputy Cathey, and Deputy Buntin from the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene.

Upon their arrival, deputies discovered that Sills had an active arrest warrant against him. In addition to the warrant, he is now facing charges of criminal trespass and aggravated attempted burglary. Our deputies were also assisted by the Bells Police Department.

Sheriff Troy Klyce praised the swift actions of the young girl and the collaboration of community members: “This incident serves as a testament to the courage and resourcefulness of our community. It’s heartening to see citizens step up to protect their neighborhood. Our deputies commend the bravery of the young girl and appreciate the assistance rendered by witnesses. I am especially glad the young lady was not hurt by this nuisance in our community.”
