Heat warning continues in West TN: How you can stay cool
This time of year can be dangerous for anyone without proper cooling resources.
“With the extremely dangerous heat that we’re experiencing right now, you can get overheated a lot quicker than just on a normal day,” said LaRae Smiley-Sliger, EMA director for Hardin County.
During this extreme heat warning, it’s important to prioritize safety. If you need a way to beat the heat, there are a few cooling resources right here in West Tennessee you can utilize.
At the Public Safety Complex in Milan, doors will open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for anyone needing relief from the heat. It’s located at 7029 Telecom Drive.
The main lobby is open and available offering cold air and water. Another cooling resource is also helping residents stay safe.
“The Voices of Savannah cooling center will be opening its doors at 11 a.m. offering cold air, water, and a safe space to anyone in need,” said LaRae.
This cooling station is located at 680 East Main Street and will run until 6 p.m.
The center operates on a volunteer basis and hopes to stay open while the heat index remains high.
“During this time of excessive heat, take advantage of the cooling centers that have been set up in our community by Voices of Savannah and in other communities. Go in and use them, those volunteers are working really hard to keep those cooling centers open to give you a chance to get in out of the heat,” said LaRae.
LaRae also urges everyone to check on their neighbors, stay hydrated and to stay indoors.
Voices of Savannah is also looking for volunteers to keep this resources available. If you would like to sign up, you can text 731-438-5166.
