Billy Ray Barnette Sr.
Born and raised in Jackson, Billy was the son of the late James Ray and Sarah Faye Barnette. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Billy Ray went on to serve his community through his work with the U.S. Postal Service, where he remained for over 20 years until his retirement.
In 1971, Billy Ray married Gay Ann Barnette, with whom he shared a devoted and fulfilling life full of laughter and a mutual appreciation for gardening. Their home was once formally recognized by the City of Jackson through the “City Beautiful” program, a testament to the care and pride they invested in their garden. Billy Ray also especially enjoyed the companionship of his late, beloved dog, Oscar.
Billy Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Gay Ann; his brothers, James “Jimmy” Barnette and John Barnette; his stepson, Billy Jack Norvell; and his daughter, Elizabeth Lamport.
He is survived by his children, Billy Ray Barnette Jr. (Jane) and Judy Dixon (Chip); his stepchildren, Harold “Buddy” Norvell Jr. and Gay Beth Bolton; his granddaughter, Leah Beth Bolton (Jacob Wingfield); and two great grandsons, Jack Barnette and Charles Bolton Wingfield. He is also survived by his sisters, Nellie Paris (Wade) and Helen Fowler (Larry), along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Angela Brown, who has cared for the Barnette family as her own.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 30, at 10:00 a.m. at George A. Smith and Sons North Chapel in Jackson. A brief visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m.
