Symbol of liberty, freedom planted in north Jackson park

JACKSON, Tenn. — Monday, the James Madison Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution planted one of 250 “liberty trees” in the Hub City.

The tree — an American elm — is located at Liberty Park in north Jackson.

This initiative is part of a nationwide celebration leading up to our nation’s 250th Anniversary on July 4, 2026.

“This tree is symbolic of the tree that existed in Boston before and during the Revolutionary War,” said Larry Newsom, President, James Madison Chapter of the Songs of the American Revolution. “The tree has a lot of significance as far as a symbol of liberty and freedom.”

Dedication of liberty tree will be held this Thursday, August 14, starting at 10 a.m.

Some members of the chapter will be dressed in 18th-century military uniforms, similar to those worn by American Revolutionary soldiers.
