Educator of the Week: Tarissa Gavin
It’s time now to recognize our Educator of the Week, brought to you by the Tennessee Education Lottery.
Tarissa Gavin is a 1st Grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School.
She shares why being a part of the staff means so much to her.
“I couldn’t ask for a better environment,” Gavin said. “The staff is nurturing, the principle is nurturing, it’s just a very happy environment.”
Gavin has been in education for for six years, but teaching wasn’t her first choice. She started at UT Martin as a nursing major, but learned early on that she was meant for something else.
“Throughout my college career, I just said I have a passion for kids, and I just love kids. Seeing those warm smiles every morning, it just makes my heart melt,” Gavin said.
Her passion led her to Union University, where she pursued her masters degree.
She was then given the opportunity at Lincoln Elementary as an assistant.
“I started off as an assistant, and from there on I kind of propelled forward becoming a first grade teacher educator,” she said.
When it comes to 1st Grade, she says it’s important to use visual and hands-on learning to keep students engaged.
She shares how acknowledging her students is her favorite part of teaching.
“I love giving out rewards, like Skittles. Believe it or not, just seeing their smiles on their face, knowing that they have achieved something, means that doing what I’m supposed to be doing,” she said.
Gavin also gives some advice for aspiring teachers.
“Take your time throughout education, because it is a process. And never stop learning, because as soon as you stop learning, your missing out on other vital parts of education.”
Gavin is now eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
