PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MADISON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE:
Madison County Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents of Scam Calls Impersonating Law Enforcement
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is alerting residents about a surge in scam calls targeting individuals in Madison County. These deceptive calls, often showing a legitimate phone number from the sheriff’s office or other variations, falsely claim to be associated with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. The scammers may even use the name of an actual MCSO employee to further their deception. The most recent scam involves a person purporting to be Sergeant Jason Lewis with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. This is a scam!
In these fraudulent calls, scammers pose as MCSO deputies and falsely accuse the recipient of failing to appear for jury duty, have unpaid traffic citations, or even have official documents to serve the individual with. Victims are then given specific payment instructions, which may involve withdrawing cash from an ATM, sending a money order, or purchasing gift cards. The scammers claim this payment is necessary to resolve the supposed court matter.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: This is a SCAM!
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office wants to stress that it will NEVER make such calls or request any form of payment over the phone. No legitimate MCSO deputy will ever ask for cash, and any website provided for online payments by scammers is fraudulent and should not be visited. Additionally, any phone number or recorded message falsely claiming to be from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office is also part of the scam.
If you receive a call of this nature, it is crucial to report it immediately by contacting the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at 731-423-6000.
We urge the community to share this important information with family and friends to ensure that everyone is aware of this ongoing scam and can take precautions to avoid becoming a victim. Please take a moment to share this message with your contacts.
