How to make the transition from pediatric to adult healthcare smoother

JACKSON, Tenn. — The difficulties of making the critical move from pediatric to adult health is affecting kids.

Research shows that kids — especially those with a chronic illness — may lack sufficient preparation. This often results in loss of follow-ups and worsening health or disease complications.

However, chief pharmacy officer and head of specialty operations for CVS health, Lucille Accetta, shares recommendations for a smooth transition to adult care.

“Really empowering them, educating them on your health insurance, looking at their policies, making sure that they’re comfortable with their pharmacy, understand if they need a specialty pharmacy like Madison — what that entails. And also, I think really the most important is really understanding if they’re on a medication that it’s critical to stay adherent,” said Accetta.

Maddison Miller, who, at 19, made the leap from her long-time pediatric care team to an adult physician and now manages her own cystic fibrosis treatment with the support of family and her dedicated care team.
