4-H members compete at Grill Master Challenge
JACKSON, Tenn.—Local grill teams compete at the regional 4-H competition in Jackson.
The Western Region 4-H Grill Master Challenge took place Saturday at Fred Young Park.
The challenge is a way for local youth to not only hone their grilling and food preparation skills but also learn how to practice safe food handling procedures.
The contest is open to 4-H students grades 6th-12th. And grill teams are made up of four members who cook up meats from four categories including pork, poultry, beef and lamb.
This hands-on experience allows for each member to focus on one type of meat and each contestant is then judged on the finished product.
A panel of judges composed of UT staff and other members of the community donate their time to judge the competition.
Judges score contestants based on more than just the looks, taste, and texture of the meats. Scores also include their individual safety scores to determine a final overall score.
Top scores determine the winners, who are presented with awards at the end of the competition.
“Stuff like this is just a small scale of what you see of 4-h. There’s so many other things including showing, goats, animals, and speech contest. It’s not even just that it’s the community and family that 4-h gives to you and you build,” said Sasha Moore, member of Carroll Co. Grill Masters Team.
The Grill Master Competition takes place annually with some winners advancing to the state competition.
