Community gathers for 9/11 remembrance in downtown Lexington

LEXINGTON, Tenn. — Many people gathered on the lawn of the Henderson County Courthouse for an incredibly heartfelt event.

Ava Salmon, a Beta club member at Lexington High School, came up with this idea after learning of a possible grant.

“We saw it on social media and we thought that it would be a good opportunity for the youth to raise awareness for this event that happened before we were around so we could all know more about it and learn more about it,” Salmon said.

“A lot of it was me and my mon, and Beta club helped, and a lot of other youth in the community,” Salmon added. “My good friends helped and people brought in donations for things. It was just a group effort with a lot of youth.”

Michele Little lives here in West Tennessee. She spoke to the audience about the story of her sister-in-law who was in one of the towers that morning.

“She got on that subway and rushed down to Battery Park and got to the Twin Towers and got on the elevator and went up to the 106th floor,” Little said.

Lexington Police, Fire and dispatch, Henderson County Sheriff and Fire departments, as well as the EMTs and 911, and finally the American Legion and the Rescue Squad were all in attendance and were recognized.

Salmon tells us how important this great turnout was.

“It means that people care and want to show support,” Salmon said. “It was really nice seeing everybody come out and support the Beta club.”

The Caywood Elementary choir, Madi Bell, and Jerie Joy Broadway all sang at the ceremony.

Other speakers at the event were Captain Kenneth Sullivan and Jeremy Lansing.
