Stink bugs 101: Tips to keep the odor-emitting insects out of your home

JACKSON, Tenn. — As we head into the fall season, Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs will be seeking shelter.

These invasive shield-shaped pests are known for their notorious foul odor.

The National Pest Management Association gives some tips to prevent stink bugs from entering your home.

First, seal all openings with caulk and check screens on windows and doors for holes.

Next, keep exterior lighting to a minimum and eliminate moisture buildup around the home.

“These bugs will find their way behind siding,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, Senior VP, Public Affairs, National Pest Management Association. “They’ll find their way into cracks around doors or windows. They’ll even enter attic vents that haven’t been sealed up properly, that aren’t screened properly.”

Stink bugs can be confused with other occasional invaders, and improper treatment can actually make the problem worse.
