FHU students hear from Tennessee’s attorney general ahead of Constitution Day

HENDERSON, Tenn. — Freed-Hardeman University is celebrating Constitution Day early.

Students filled the Ayers Auditorium in the Brown-Kopel Business Center to hear Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti speak about the constitution, as a guest speaker for the program.

Audience members had the opportunity to ask questions at the end for an open discussion.

Constitution Day reinforces the importance of the federal government structure and the independent judiciary distinguishing three separate branches–Legislative, Executive, and Judicial–to prevent any single branch from becoming too powerful.

“I think it’s important to help our students develop an appreciation for the constitutional system we have in this county and how the various aspects of how the constitution is structured protects our freedoms,” said Stephen Morris, professor of law and political studies.

“We are all in the same country. We’re all working toward a brighter future. We all want our kids to grow up in a better place than we did, and we got to work together to make that happen,” said Skrmetti.

Constitution Day, observed annually on September 17, commemorates the signing of the U.S. constitution in 1787.
