Step into healthy habits during the West Tennessee River Walk Challenge
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURE:
Step Into Healthy Habits During the West Tennessee River Walk Challenge
Annual Competition Set to Begin October 6
JACKSON, Tenn. – Residents across Tennessee are lacing up their sneakers for a competition that is both fun and healthy. The 2025 West Tennessee River Walk Challenge will take place from October 6 to November 16, inviting people of all ages to take steps toward stronger community connections and improved physical wellness.
Over the course of six weeks, participants will walk alone or with others for at least 90 miles, the distance between the Mississippi and Tennessee rivers. Competitors can walk at home, at the gym, in their neighborhood or anywhere else convenient. All progress will be reported based on the honor system using smartphones, pedometers, fitness watches or other step-recording devices.
“Physical activity is one of the best ways to reduce stress, improve mobility, enhance cardiovascular health and more,” says Deanna Poole, family and consumer sciences Extension agent at UT-TSU Extension Gibson County. “Competitors could also receive both weekly and grand prizes, so there’s no telling what goodies you might take home!”
The West Tennessee River Walk Challenge is hosted by the Simple Solutions Cluster of family and consumer sciences Extension agents from the following counties: Crockett, Decatur, Dyer, Gibson, Madison, Obion and Shelby. However, anyone in West Tennessee is invited to participate.
Registration is due by October 3 with no cost to join. Sign up at tiny.utk.edu/westtnriverwalk25
