Lexington woman seeks answers after her granddaughter’s grave was vandalized

LEXINGTON, Tenn. — The grandmother of the late Shayna Renee Cozart is speaking out after having issues after she claims someone vandalized Cozart’s grave earlier this month.

Shayna Cozart is pictured with one of her children.

The incident took place at the Lexington Cemetery, which appears to be a prominent burial location within Henderson County.

“We filed out a police report. We would just like to know if anybody knows anything or seen anything suspicious on September the 10th or 11th. We would like for them to notify us or the Lexington Police Department,” said Frieda Perry.

Perry describes the extent of damage that occurred.

“They got one of the smaller lights, they broke the angels and just tore it up real bad. I mean Shayla’s been dead seven years and there’s just no reason for anyone to do that to anyone’s grave,” said Perry.

Loved ones have asked friends and family members previously not to place balloons on Shana’s graves as she didn’t like them growing up.

Recently, there were balloons placed on the grave, which Perry says was unusual. She says after the balloons were taken down there may have been retaliation from another individual.

“We think that whoever put the balloons on her grave this last time got upset that they were cut off. I think it made whoever that put them on there mad so they went over there and destroyed the other stuff on her grave,” said Perry.

Perry tells us, after seven years, she just wants peace for the sake of her family and the two small children that Cozart left behind.

“She was my life. She doesn’t know what they did to her grave, but I know it and her two kids know it. Whoever would do such mean, cruel stuff–they don’t have a soul,” said Perry.

If you have any information that could lead authorities to the person responsible call Lexington Police at 731 968-2211.
