Weakley County Schools investigate swatting incident, determine threat as non-credible

INFORMATION FROM WEAKLEY COUNTY SCHOOLS ON 9/25/25:

Weakley County Schools was recently made aware of a swatting incident outside of school hours which targeted an individual student. While the report was anonymous, vague, and determined to have originated outside the United States, it caused safety concerns. After a thorough investigation, law enforcement deemed the threat non-credible.

A “swatting incident” occurs when someone maliciously makes a false report of a serious, violent crime, such as an active shooter or bomb threat, to provoke an armed law enforcement response to a specific location.

We are deeply grateful for the swift response and collaboration of the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department, Sharon Police Department, Martin Police Department, and the Department of Homeland Security. We also commend the student who first reported concerns to authorities—an important reminder of the role we all play in protecting one another.

While this threat was not credible, it highlights a trending concern nationwide. Swatting is when someone makes a false report of a serious emergency to provoke a law enforcement response. These types of incidents can be disruptive, alarming, and dangerous. Combined with online scams such as catfishing—when someone pretends to be someone they are not to deceive others—students face risks that families need to be aware of.

We encourage parents and guardians to remain vigilant in discussing online safety with their children. Talk openly about the dangers of interacting with unknown individuals online, stress the importance of not sharing personal information, and remind students to report any uncomfortable or unsafe situation to a trusted adult. If a parent or guardian ever becomes aware of a potential threat or suspicious online activity, they should immediately contact local law enforcement.

To further support families, Weakley County Schools is developing additional online safety resources that will be shared in the coming weeks through our website and social media.

As always, student safety remains our top priority.
