Memphis prepares for arrival of extra law enforcement
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hundreds of extra law enforcement officers are expected in Memphis this week, including the National Guard. Their purpose is to serve as “extra eyes and ears” in the community.

In downtown Memphis on Monday morning, questions remained about what exactly this law enforcement surge will look like.
The Memphis Task Force is a federal initiative launched earlier this month by President Donald Trump to address rising violent and property crime rates in Memphis. It comprises of 13 federal agencies, including the National Guard, state troopers and more.
Governor Bill Lee says up to 150 National Guard members could be deployed — but he emphasized they won’t be armed unless local officials request it, and they won’t be making arrests. The City has also been quick to point out that there will not be tanks rolling through neighborhoods.
On top of that, the Governor says 300 Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers are expected in the region.
But what’s unclear is when all of that will take effect.
The City of Memphis initiated a website designed to keep residents informed on the federal surge. At memphistn.gov/safeandclean, resources are available on what this will look like in the city. There are also contact numbers to share your experiences and concerns.
Mayor Paul Young states: “Our goal is to ensure that the state and federal efforts coming to Memphis are guided by one purpose: to uplift our community and accelerate a safer, stronger future. This is our moment to show the world the truth about Memphis.”
Over the weekend, dozens marched to City Hall, arguing that Memphis does not need more federal boots on the ground — but more investment in schools, youth programs, and hospitals.
The task force is expected in Memphis sometime Monday.
