Candy expert talks impact of confectionary industry amid Halloween season
JACKSON, Tenn. — October is finally here, which means many people are thinking about costumes, decorations, and especially candy.
Candy has been on the shelves for a while now as we are preparing for the Halloween season.
When it comes to favorites, chocolate comes in at number one for top treats, followed by gummy candy. Carly Schildhaus with the National Confectioners Association tells us of the other three.
“Candy corn is an iconic part of the Halloween season, and, if you’re looking for just a little more inspiration, you can round out the top five with hard candy and lollipops,” Schildhaus said.
The confectionary industry refers to the making of candy and sweets. Data shows that American consumers spent $7.4 billion on Halloween chocolate and candy last year. This made up 18% of all confectionary retail sales.
“The confectionary industry has a really big impact even though those treats are really little,” she said. “We employ nearly 58,000 people in confectionary manufacturing jobs across 1,600 manufacturing facilities.”
The industry as a whole generates $54 billion in annual sales.
94% of Americans will share chocolate and candy with family and friends during Halloween.
“This ability to enhance seasons and holidays and occasions like the Halloween season. But it is really important to note that chocolate and candy are different from other food.”
89% of people say seasonal treats are more fun when they reflect Halloween’s shapes, colors, flavors, and have spooky packaging.
And all the kids better watch out, as over three quarters of all parents admit to sneaking some candy from their children’s stash.
