UT System President Randy Boyd visits West Tennessee schools

JACKSON, Tenn. — University of Tennessee System President Randy Boyd visited Crockett County and South Gibson County High Schools Thursday, to speak with students about college opportunities and the value of higher education.

The visits conclude Boyd’s “Find Your Future” high school tour, a fall initiative that brought him to 11 high schools and allowed him to speak to around 3,500 students across Tennessee about how a UT degree can transform lives.

At each stop, students heard personal stories and encouragement from Boyd, UT Martin Chancellor Yancy Freeman, and a recent UT graduate.

“We try to help them answer three questions: should they go? And we make a clear argument that you should do something beyond high school. Whether it’s a certificate, technical school, community college, or a four year degree. Second: we’re letting them know that it’s affordable. Because of the Tennessee Promise and UT Promise, most of these students can go for free. And finally, we are letting them know there’s five great campuses, including, UT Martin.”

Boyd also emphasized the UT System’s commitment to affordability.

More than half of UT students graduate debt free, a reality made possible through financial aid programs and scholarships like UT Pomise, which assists with tuition and mandatory fees for eligible Tennessee residents.
