Former TV journalist fired due to alcohol addiction releases book

JACKSON, Tenn. — Recent stats show that in 2024, 28 million people reported they suffered from an alcohol use disorder. That is 1 in 10 people.

We were able to speak with Beth McDonough, the author of a book describing her story overcoming alcoholism.

She spent three decades in television as a journalist covering high-profile crimes. She was later fired from her job due to her complications with alcohol.

Through hard work and dedication, she has now been sober for 16 years and has written a book to try and help people going through the same thing.

“Here is the thing with alcohol: it doesn’t negotiate,” McDonough said. “It is a taker, not a giver. It is an equal opportunity disease. Over time, I white knuckled it for a while thinking I could get over this problem on my own because we’re all smart people, right?”

You can find her book “Standby” at just about any bookstore in person or online.
