Fire burns Humboldt home, one found dead
HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — A cooking accident turned tragic after a fire broke out, leading to one person being found dead.
On Sunday, October 12, at approximately 5 p.m., the Humboldt Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire in the 3,000 block of East Mitchell Street.
“Last night, our crews got a call about a house that was on fire,” said Humboldt Fire Chief Greg Lencioni. “Upon arrival, there was no fire or smoke visible, but there had been a fire in the house.”
The Humboldt Police Department also responded to the scene, blocking the area off at 30th and Mitchell Street and extending to Hillside.
We’re told that when crews entered the home, the resident was located in a bedroom. The medical examiner pronounced the individual dead at the scene.
At this time, neither the identity of the deceased nor the cause of death have been released to the public.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was also called in to assist.
“They found the stove–one of the eyes on the stove was on, and there was a pot of–looked like grease there. Family said that she made French fries a lot,” Chief Lencioni said.
According to Chief Lencioni, the cause of the fire has been ruled accidental. It appears the pot of grease was left unattended, but self-extinguished before authorities arrived on scene.
