Dr. Amy Safaty with CVS Pharmacy says it’s a good idea to keep pain relievers, electrolytes, and nasal decongestants on hand.

It’s also important to check the expiration dates on all of your medications.

“So, with medications, they don’t go bad after the expiration date, but they can lose potency,” Dr. Safaty said. “So, they don’t necessarily hurt you when they’re expired, but they’re not going to be able to help you either.”

Dr. Safaty says the best practice is to get rid of anything that has expired and restock.

One common dilemma people face is whether to buy store brand or brand name products.

“When it comes to the store brand versus the national brand, the store brand has to undergo the same safety and ethicacy testing by the FDA that the national brands do, so they’re just as safe, just as effective, but they’re going to save you money as well,” said Dr. Safaty.

Safaty also says to be cautious of active ingredients in over-the-counter meds that you shouldn’t mix together.

Consulting with your doctor is the best way to keep you safe.
