Proclamation made at Jackson City Hall for World Polio Day

JACKSON, Tenn. — Every year on October 24, World Polio Day is observed to raise awareness of the importance of polio vaccination to protect every child from this devastating disease. The day also celebrates the many parents, professionals and volunteers whose contributions make polio eradication achievable.

World Polio Day highlights the global efforts to end poliomyelitis worldwide. Thursday, Jackson Mayor Scott Conger hosted a World Polio Day proclamation at city hall.

Polio is a life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus, which the world health assembly committed to eradicate in 1988.

“We appreciate the mayor taking the time to make this proclamation to emphasize our work in this community, but the work of rotary international throughout the world. The process of trying to bring better health to children throughout the world is far from over,” said David Comperry, president of the Jackson Rotary Club.

Attendees wore a red “end polio now” t-shirt in support of the cause.
