Dresden opens time capsule buried in 1975

DRESDEN, Tenn. – On Saturday, October 25, the City of Dresden revealed parts of its history as it dug up a time capsule buried in 1975.

Opening the time capsule was part of the city’s Bicentennial Celebration. When the time capsule was opened, the city discovered it was holding water and caused  many of the items to be covered with mud.

The city has reached out to the University of Tennessee at Martin Archives to inquire about how to clean and preserve those items.

Some of the items in the capsule were recognizable and cleaner than those with mud. The items that were recognizable included hats, coins, letters, photos, cassette tapes, signs, a ceramic plate from the Sesquicentennial Celebration, award ribbons, ink pens, and lapel buttons.

The city said personal items will turned over to appropriate family members and the rest of the items will be on display at the Dresden Municipal Complex.
