Workshop encourages residents to take control of their finances

JACKSON, Tenn. — Are you ready to take control of your finances? Several organizations held a workshop Wednesday empowering residents to do just that.

Budgeting and managing your finances can feel overwhelming, so the Greater Jackson Financial Empowerment Center and the Jackson American Job Center have partnered to offer a free workshop.

“Mastering Your Money: Take Control of Your Financial Journey!” is a free workshop that addressed common financial challenges.

“Money is kind of like a vehicle to get you to where–your goals right? And so, if you don’t realize you’re driving a car, your money’s going to drive you rather than you driving your money. And so, today is a lot about helping people understand what is the vehicle of their finances look like to achieve their goals,” said Jordan Howerton, Regional Director of the Greater Jackson Financial Empowerment Center.

Located at 1124 Whitehall Street, Suite 100, the workshop was open to residents living paycheck to paycheck, struggling with debt, or who simply want to build better money habits.

“I think one of the biggest obstacles for people making wise financial decisions is they don’t fully understand where their own money’s going, and they don’t fully understand what are the decisions they’re making on a day-to-day basis that contribute to that,” Howerton said.

Participants learned how to manage and track cashflow and how to develop a budgeting plan.

“One of the biggest things that, actually, this kind of practice helps us with is understanding what are my patterns of spending right now that I can now change and adjust to match some of those new prices right? So, this might not be fun, but I might have to spend a little less on eating out if everything’s costing a little more,” Howerton said.

The GFEC provides free financial counseling to all West Tennessee residents, no income or program eligibility required.
