Jury delivers guilty verdicts in murder of 18-year-old

DYER COUNTY, Tenn. — The Dyer County Sheriff’s Office announces that on November 6, 2025, a Dyer County jury found Deshawn “Money” Gorman and Demauzay “Zay” Jackson guilty of First Degree Murder in connection with the tragic death of Daronte Herbert.

Just 18 years old at the time, Herbert was lured by the suspects to Bean Mill Road in April 2018, where they murdered him.

The jury returned a guilty verdict for both defendants and they were subsequently sentenced immediately to life in prison by Circuit Court Judge Mark Hayes. A life sentence means the two defendants in this case must serve 51 years before having the possibility of parole.

Sheriff Jeff Box expressed his approval of the jury’s decision, stating, “The jury got it right and this verdict serves as a reminder of our commitment to justice for the victims of violence in our community. The violent murder of Daronte Herbert has left an indelible mark on our community, and we hope that this conviction can bring some closure to his family and friends.”
The case was prosecuted vigorously by the 29th District Attorney’s Office, with District Attorney General Danny Goodman, Jr. as the lead prosecutor reflecting their dedication to seek justice in this tragic case. The criminal investigation, led by Dyer County Sheriff’s Office Chief Investigator Terry McCreight and his team of investigators, involved a very meticulous investigation and collaboration with local and state partners to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act were held accountable.
Sheriff Box added, “We understand the pain and suffering this incident has caused not only for the Herbert family but for our entire Dyer County community. Our office remains dedicated to maintaining the safety and well-being of our residents and will continue to work tirelessly against violence and crime in our area.”
