We speak with authorities on the adverse affects that violent behavior has on officers providing emergency response everyday.

According to the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department, on Saturday night a call to 9-1-1 led officers to a residence that resulted in an officer-involved shooting.

Leader with the sheriff’s department tell us authorities responded to an emergency call of a domestic dispute that resulted in an officer discharging their weapon, striking the suspect and injuring him.

Public Information Officer Stephen Sutton with Crockett County that gives us some insight on the physical and mental impact officer’s experience.

“It’s difficult what our officers face everyday on the streets. To maintain peace and dignity is a lot. No law enforcement officer wakes up and comes to work wanting to be involved in an incident like this,” said Sutton.

According to the National Institute of Health, officers who shoot someone experience a wide range of immediate and long-term effects, including perceptual distortions during the incident, and subsequent psychological and physical symptoms like anxiety, sleep disturbances, and in some cases, post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.

Sutton says even though no officers were injured, the adverse effects still leave an impression on their lives.

“It’s a very serious situation anytime an officer has to discharge a weapon in the line of duty. There’s help, hope, and healing for domestic violence and this individual that was involved with this domestic violence last night will face charges by the Gadsden Police Department upon his recovery,” said Sutton Sutton.

Sutton also offers this advice to victims of domestic violence.

“If you find yourself in a situation of domestic violence there’s help and we encourage you to reach out to those resources that will help you and your loved one to be safe,” said Sutton.

The suspect is currently recovering after being flown to a level one trauma center for medical treatment. In accordance with standard procedure the TBI is conducting an independent investigation.
