The Rarest Names in Every U.S. State
When it comes to choosing a name, many parents want something that stands out, something unique. After all, a name is the first impression we give to the world. While some names rise to the top across the nation, other states feature rare gems, names that are anything but ordinary.

Keep in mind that names with fewer than five births are excluded by SSA to maintain privacy, which is why the number of births for these names is listed as 5 (lowest record available).

Methodology
This study looks at the most unusual names in each US state using data from the Social Security Administration. The research team gathered information from the “Beyond the Top 1000 Names” list, covering the years 2014 to 2024 for both national and state databases. They focused on names that had at least five births between 2014 and 2024 in each state, so only less common names were included. Once the data was collected, the team compared each state’s names with the national total for that name. This helped determine how much of the national share came from each state. The names with the highest share in a particular state were ranked as the most unusual.
