Holiday safety reminders as you shop and prepare to gather with loved ones

JACKSON, Tenn. — Thanksgiving is almost here and many across the region are heading home for the holiday.

At this time of year shoppers, travelers, and tourist are reminded to keep their head on the swivel during the hustle and bustle this season.

As you prepare the turkey for the table this year those that are leaving their homes to travel elsewhere should ensure their residence is secured especially if your thanksgiving visit will last more than a week.

“Check in with your neighbors that you know and trust. If you know you’re going to be gone you’re also welcome to call the sheriff’s department and ask for extra patrol in your neighborhood,” said Stephen Sutton, public information officer for Crockett County.

Also while holiday shopping, here are some things to remember.

“As you think about the holiday season think about safe places to shop and think about small towns, small businesses, and their support. Be aware of your surroundings. You know, ‘Where am I going? Is this a safe time to go to this place? If it’s late at night maybe I need to go during the day.’ The easiest thing to do is lock your doors–lock your vehicle doors! Keep your purse and other valuables out of sight. Carry shopping only the bare minimum. Take only the things that you need,” said Sutton.

Many travelers are traveling across the state to get to the holiday especially for Black Friday, family, friends and so much more.

We caught up with one couple that has an anniversary tomorrow. They actually got married two days after Thanksgiving, and they share their thoughts on what they’re most thankful for this season.

“It was two days after Thanksgiving when we got married 48 years ago on a Saturday. Be thankful for the Lord. That is one thing that we really need to be thankful for because without his love and his kindness there would be no hope, and without hope what’s there to be thankful for,” said Terry Smith, Thanksgiving traveler.

We also speak with a Texas native who liked traveling to Nashville to visit with family. He tells us he’s just thankful for life.

“I thank God for these days that he’s given me you know. I just can’t thank him enough. I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving,” said John Turner, Thanksgiving traveler.
