Counselor talks managing stress during the holidays

JACKSON, Tenn. — The holidays can be a time filled with happiness, celebration, and community. However, it can also bring many stresses that are tough to handle.

Dr. Dean Beckloff, a licensed professional counselor, tells us what we can be thinking about during these times.

“I think you need to have a really good goal,” Dr. Beckloff said. “What do you want? What do you want out of the situation. And if you want to put out your best china and all of that, that’s great.”

A lot of times, these stressors can be brought upon by pressure from family. Dr. Beckloff gives us information on how we can have realistic expectations.

“Well I think sometimes we have to look within and realize that we may be putting expectations on ourselves because of what we’re worried about from other people. I think, again, get clearly focused on what you want out of it,” he said.

Sometimes the business and fast-paced aspect of the holidays are not the problem. Sometimes, it is the worry of specific conversations that may be had.

“Decide on what you’re going to say. You want Uncle Joe to be there, but what can you say to defer that and move onto something else,” he said.
