MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Even after 20 years the capture of a U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted fugitive remains a priority for the U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force.

Robert Lee King, 61, is alleged to have murdered his girlfriend Dorothy Smith and attempted to murder her daughter Diana Smith, who was 20 when the crimes were committed Dec. 1, 2005.

On March 3, 2006, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office obtained a warrant for King’s arrest for first-degree murder and criminal attempt first-degree murder.
On May 29, 2009, the USMS added King to its 15 Most Wanted Fugitives List, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to his capture.
The USMS and the Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force have spent countless hours searching for King, conducting interviews, surveillance, research, and traveling all over the nation to run down leads. Now with the 20th anniversary of Smith’s murder, the USMS wants to remind everyone that the hunt for King is not over.
“Robert Lee King is a challenging case, but his capture remains one of our highest priorities,” said Tyreece Miller, U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Tennessee. “We will not stop. Our office and our partners remain dedicated to this case. We do not forget. With the memory of Dorothy Smith in our thoughts we will continue to search for Robert Lee King.”
King is a black man, standing 6 feet 2 inches and weighing approximately 185 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes and a medium skin tone. He has a tattoo of the word “Robert” on his upper right arm, “Victoria” on the lower part of his right arm and an unknown design on his upper left arm.
Anyone with information about King is encouraged to call 1-800-336-0102, email tnw.tips@usdoj.gov or submit a tip using USMS Tips.
The USMS established the 15 Most Wanted Fugitive Program in 1983 to prioritize the investigation and apprehension of high-profile offenders considered to be some of the country’s most dangerous fugitives. These offenders tend to be career criminals with histories of violence or whose instant offense(s) pose a significant threat to public safety. Current and past fugitives in this program include murderers, sex offenders, major drug kingpins, organized crime figures, and individuals wanted for high-profile financial crimes.
The U.S. Marshals Service Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force is a multi-agency task force within Western Tennessee. The TRVFTF has offices in Memphis and Jackson, and its membership is primarily composed of Deputy U.S. Marshals, Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, and Gibson County Sheriff’s Deputies, Memphis and Jackson Police Officers, Tennessee Department of Correction Special Agents and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Since 2021, the TRVFTF has captured over 3,000 violent offenders and sexual predators.
