Another Winter Clipper Coming on Thursday! Light Snow Possible.

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update

WBBJ 7 Forecast Update:

Well this forecast is shaping up to be a doozy unfortunately. There are a lot ingredients in this winter brew and a lot of possible scenarios that could play out. First off, there is a chance the low tracks too far south to bring much of anything to West Tennessee. There is also a chance the dry air from the north cuts off the low and keeps most of the precipitation south of I-40. There is a chance we are a couple degrees to warm for snow anyway and just get a cold rain. But there is also a scenario, where the low tracks through south West Tennessee, the moisture beats the dry air and we are down around 31-33° when the showers fall and we get snow. Still the best chances for snow we believe is just north of I-40 with up to an inch being possible but more likely just a dusting to a 1/2″ (if things work out for snow to fall). I would NOT be shocked in the slightest if we get a repeat of Monday either and just get a cold rain. Another thing we know for sure, there will be less showers coming down on Thursday than we saw on Monday.

A cold front will pass by early Thursday morning and will stall out during the day. A low pressure system will come up through the southern plains and pass just south of us late in the day. That will usher in showers by the afternoon. Some of the showers will try to transition to a brief wintry mix or possibly some light snow late in the evening. Snow chances are greater the further north you are, but precipitation chances are lower the further north you are as well. Also, the longer the showers hang around during the day, especially if they do after the sun sets, that will create our best chances for some small snow accumulations. This is another system where being off in the forecast by 1-2° could make a huge difference in what you see in your area. Catch the latest coming up here.

THIS WEEK:

Here we go again… going to be another close call. These are not fun forecasts for meteorologists. Being off by 1-2° could be the difference in just a cold rain and up to an inch of snow. I am leaning towards most of this coming in as a cold rain, but areas north of I-40 look to be a couple degrees cooler this time. That being said, there is a lot less moisture with this system compared to Monday’s. So even if we do see some snow, accumulations seem unlikely and any major travel impacts also seem unlikely at this time. Best chance for some snow will be after the sunsets on Thursday and along or just north of I-40. Most likely places in our forecast area to see some light snow will be between Jackson and Trenton and between Lexington and Huntington and between Covington and Ripley.

Tuesday night the winds turned up calm but the clouds stuck around.  The kept most of us around 30° all night long into Wednesday morning.  It took awhile but the sun did peak through in the afternoon and that allowed highs to reach the low to the mid 40s on Wednesday, but still staying below normal for this time of the year. The winds will be calm most of the night and Wednesday night lows will fall down to around the freezing mark of 32°. Clouds will move back into tonight and a cold front will pass early in the morning and could bring a spitting shower or two.

The front will stall just to our south and a low pressure system could be close enough Thursday into the afternoon and evening to bring another brief round of cold rain, a wintry mix or even some light snow chances. Thursday system is not going to bring as much precipitation with it as Monday night’s storm. Again we are not expecting travel impacts from that system.

We have two possible scenarios on Thursday here in West Tennessee. This is making for a very challenging forecast. One forecast has temperatures in the low 30s along & north of I-40 bringing snow Thursday evening. Another forecast has temperatures staying in the mid 30s keeping just a cold rain across the region. Things could go either way as of now, it is going to a close call.

Thursday highs will reach up to around 40° and expect a cloudy day. Showers are not expected until after noon and should clear out late Thursday night. Anything falling should wrap up by sunrise on Friday. Friday will be partly cloudy but still cold. Highs will reach the low to mid 40s and Friday night lows will fall down to around 30° to kick off our weekend. The winds will be calm for the most part on Friday.

THE WEEKEND:

Temperatures are forecast to be a little warmer this weekend with highs making it up to around 50°. Both mornings will hang in the low 30s but Sunday night we could fall back into the mid to upper 20s again. There will be another system moving through the weekend but as of now, it looks to bring a cold rain in for most of us. Depending on the timing of the system we can’t rule out a brief wintry mix or even some light snow at this time but we are leaning towards a cold rain at this time. The winds will be calm on Saturday and come out of the west on Sunday and back to the north Sunday night into Monday.
