Local school presents families with holiday food baskets

JACKSON, Tenn. — Washington Douglas Head Start in partnership with the Code Red Ministers Coalition presented 10 families with baskets for the holidays Monday.

“We believe that one of the greatest commandments that was given in the scripture in Matthew chapter 25 is ‘I was hungry and you fed me.’ All of us do a lot of things throughout our individual churches, Area Relief Ministries, and the Salvation Army. We also want to come together and do something ourselves individually,” said Bishop Nathaniel Bond with Light of Life Ministries in Jackson.

The Code Red Ministerial Coalition is a group of ministers that advocate for the betterment of the community. The baskets are filled with supplies, food, resources, and most of all hope for the community.

“On behalf of the family advocate of Washington Douglas Head Start we identify families that are needing assistance during the holidays, and here is one of our families hear at Washington Douglas. We just thank the Code Red Coalition for donating food items to our families that are in need,” said Rickcresha Higgs, family advocate for Washington Douglas Head Start.

Washington Douglas Head Start Manager Dr. Jerry Woods tells us how this impacts families across the region.

“Most recently with the government shutdown and other situations there is a great amount of need and we again try to provide that need. If we’re not able to do that we reach out to partners and they work very well with us such as code red coalition,” said Dr. Woods.

This is the first year for this community driven initiative here in the Hub City.

For families in need of assistance, there will be a toy drive on December 16 and coat drive on December 17 sponsored by First Bank of Jackson. It will be held in the Washington-Douglas Gym located at 409 Iselin Street here in Jackson.
