Jackson’s Fraternal Order of Police kicks off ‘Cops and Kids’ shopping event

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police held their annual Cops and Kids Holiday Shopping event.

Kids from around Jackson teamed up with a member of the Fraternal Order of Police to pick out gifts for their Christmas.

The Jackson Lodge consists of active and retired officers of law enforcement branches in the area.

Tuesday night, there were members of Jackson police, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and more.

“It’s just a way to give back and be looked at differently than our ordinary jobs exposed to children. This way they get something and we get something in return as well because we’re building a bridge to the community,” said Jeff Shepard, president of the Jackson Lodge.

Each officer teamed up with 1-2 kids and walked through the north Jackson Walmart picking out roughly $250 worth of goodies for Christmas.

A few things off limits were electronics or playing cards. But none of the kids seemed interested in those to begin with.

“You’ll see some that’ll go to get bicycles and unfortunately some of them will just want to get food,” said Shepard.

At the end of their shopping spree, these kids and the officers were taken care of by a team of Walmart associates.

The children went home with sweet treats, games, and toys and at least one bicycle went to a new home.

The employees, officers, and kids were all smiles throughout the store.
