Tips to prevent equipment from freezing ahead of low temperatures

JACKSON, Tenn. — With the upcoming colder temperatures later this weekend we have some tips on how to prevent your pipes, hoses, and sprinkler systems from freezing.

When temperatures start to drop, it is very common for pipes and other equipment that use water to freeze. Pipes freeze when exposed to very cold weather.

They are more likely to freeze in attics, crawl spaces, basements, and garages. There are many reasons why this could happen including poor insulation and low temperatures in your house.

Jared Counce with Tim Ferguson Plumbing Air and Electric provides some tips on how you can prevent your pipes from freezing.

“If it is extremely cold, you can leave water running at your faucets and cabinet doors open that way the heat can get to those pipes. Just make sure that your crawl spaces are all sealed up to prevent the wind and cold temperatures from getting in that area,” said Counce.

Hoses and sprinkler systems are also at risk for freezing. These can freeze over if you do not properly winterize them.

According to the Moreland Hose Corporation, the most common mistakes made when it is time to begin winterizing is waiting to long and incomplete draining. Counce says to make sure to detach your hose before you have issues.

“The hose bibs for sure is the biggest thing. It is important to make sure that you have the water hoses disconnected,” said Counce.

When equipment freezes it can expensive to repair but with the proper preparation it is avoidable.

If you do have problems with your equipment, it is recommended to contact a local plumbing company.
