Christmas tree recycling program underway in Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. — Christmas tree disposal is an important part of cleanup if you and your family use live trees.

Chipping of the Greens returned Wednesday beginning at 8 a.m. at four locations around the Hub City.

This event serves as a safe way to dispose of live Christmas trees and provide mulch to those who want it.

You can drop your trees off at North Park and Liberty Garden in north Jackson, Malesus Park in south Jackson, and the City of Jackson Fire Training Center near downtown Jackson.

One common problem with common Christmas trees such as pines and firs is that they are highly flammable. Both the needles and the bark have very flammable substances such as the waxy coating on the needles and the extremely flammable sap in the bark and the wood.

A live tree could become engulfed in flames in as little as 10 seconds, so just be safe and bring it down to one of the four locations to be mulched.

These trees are not going to light on fire on their own, but faulty lighting or nearby heat sources could create a flammable problem especially if these trees have been in your house for a long time.

The health and sanitation department will also be doing tree pickups across the Hub City.

To request a tree pickup, you can do so by calling the health and sanitation department, calling 3-1-1, or using the Connect Jackson TN app.

If you use the app, you will need to put in a request under bulk yard waste pickup.

The trees will be mulched at a later date, and mulch will be available for pickup on January 17 from 8 a.m. to noon or until they run out of mulch.

This is a recycling initiative but artificial trees will not be accepted. Also, decorations must be removed before drop off or pick up.
