Crockett County Sheriff’s Office confirms death of inmate

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CROCKETT COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE:

ALAMO, TN – [January 1, 2026] — The Crockett County Sheriff’s Office has announced the death of an inmate.

“The Crockett County Sheriff’s Office confirms that an inmate was discovered unresponsive within an isolation cell this morning.

Immediate actions were taken to provide assistance, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the initiation of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Crockett EMS responded, treated, and transported to a local hospital, where the patient, 46 year old Jennifer Hackney, was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The family has been notified and Sheriff Klyce extends his heartfelt sympathy to them during this difficult time.

The Crockett County Sheriff’s Office will initiate an internal investigation to further review the circumstances surrounding this incident and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) will assist.

The Crockett County Medical Examiner’s Office has ordered the autopsy, with arrangements being made for transportation to the Middle Tennessee Regional Forensic Center in Nashville.

Hackney was incarcerated on the following charges:

  • Simple possession of meth
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Introduction of contraband into a penal facility
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Schedule II possession with intention to manufacture, sell, or deliver
