JMCSS staff join together for 2026 Opening of Schools Convocation

JACKSON, Tenn. — Monday morning, the Jackson-Madison County School System all came together at the Oman Arena for a convocation.

They were able to listen to various speakers.

They were also shown different videos made from the different schools. Melissa Spurgeon, chief of staff for JMCSS, tells us who all was in attendance.

“This is all of our 2,000 employees. Faculty, staff, everybody from the superintendent, to teachers, to bus drivers, to cafeteria workers, everyone,” said Spurgeon.

During the summer, they always have a big day for everyone to come together and celebrate the start of the school year. This is the first time they are doing something before the second semester.

“It is more of a formal ceremony for us to just encourage the whole staff to push through to the end of the school year for our students,” said Spurgeon.

However, this was not the only thing on the agenda Monday. Teachers had to get back to their classrooms to prepare for the first day back.

“So today is an in-service day. We’ll be here till about 10:30 or 11, and then they’ll report to their schools for the afternoon,” said Spurgeon.

Students will return to their schools and classrooms Tuesday. Both mayors, city councilmembers, county commissioners, and a state senator were also in attendance at the meeting.
