Zoning ordinance, sale of land among agenda items in Jackson’s monthly city council meeting

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson City Council held their regular monthly meeting Tuesday morning.

Jackson City Hall

Towards the end of the meeting, discussion was had regarding the sale of city-owned property to The Crossings development. This is located off of North Highland where the disc golf course is.

This sale would take out nearly half of the course that is used for the State Games, as well as other tournaments and recreational use. The council decided to postpone this vote.

Mayor Scott Conger tells us why.

“The provision to, if the sale is finalized, utilize that land for the state games this summer. Then look at utilization plus the land purchase going forward how we utilize that land for the disc golf course,” said Mayor Conger.

The potential to use part of money from the sale for a redesign of the disc golf course was also brought up as a possibility.

There was also an item on the agenda that would amend the zoning ordinance regarding vape shops.

Stan Pilant, the city’s planning director, explains this a little bit.

“Also, we feel like, by restricting them to certain zones and commercial districts, that we will limit the number over time,” said Pilant.

Councilman Russ McKelvey spoke up during the discussion saying that this does not solve the problem of underage individuals getting their hands on these products.

This was a main reason for bringing this item on the agenda.

“The problem is, if you start restricting businesses, you’ve done nothing to the fact that they are widely sold in gas stations, convenience stores, groceries, it does nothing to those places,” said Councilman McKelvey.

Councilman Mckelvey went on to say that this agenda item restricts small businesses in Jackson while not addressing the issue of kids getting in possession of these items. The council voted against the amendment.

The city council will meet this Thursday, January 8, at 3 p.m. to discuss the bond package, as well as the sale for the land with the disc golf course.
