$26 million loan approved to fund city-wide improvements in Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson City Council voted on Thursday to authorize a loan of $26 million for city improvements.

A decision was made and District 4 representative Councilman Richard Donnell, who voted yes, tells us what went into his vote.

“Well the fact that ten million of that goes towards streets, and that the thing that I’m really passionate about because in my district we have some streets that are really in a big state of disrepair and I want to address that as soon as we can,” said Councilman Donnell.

From that $26 million, $10 million is for street improvements, $4 million is directed to the turn in field project, and $2.5 million is arranged for the police department.

Street paving in particular has been one of the most important issues addressed.

“Well there’s a lot of things on my list but roads right now is one of the biggest things, because like I said, people are driving their cars and that’s a major investment and that’s sometimes that really needs to be done, and so that’s my major priority right now, the other things that need to be done, like the police department, as I’ve said, civic has some things we need to do, and there are other things as well, but the road are my priority,” said Councilman Donnell.

The money is expected as soon as January 22 and some of these projects have already began, while others could see construction begin as soon as this year. Repaving for these roads could start as early as March depending on weather conditions.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 3.
