High utility bill? Here are some tips on how to lower it
JACKSON, Tenn. — As temps drop lower, many heating systems may be working overtime leading to higher utility bills.

As winter temperatures return to West Tennessee, many people are turning up the heat. While it’s important to stay warm, you might be in for a big surprise when your utility bill comes in the mail.
Steve Bowers with Jackson Energy Authority joins us over the phone with more insight on what you can expect.

“Base rates don’t change, [they] haven’t changed at JEA in the electric division for a good while. What’s going to change as far as people’s utility usage will be the consumption,” said Bowers.
Bowers says higher usage leads to a higher power bill. The most direct way to lower your bill each month is to reduce your energy consumption.
“The only way to address that, as far as immediate usage, is to keep a house as cool as possible with setting a thermostat at 68 rather than 78 is our recommendation,” said Bowers.
Another tip is to consider shifting your appliance use. Instead of using a fully conventional oven that consumes more electricity, use your microwave.
“Make sure to check around door seals, windows and all for potential leaks. If there’s lights coming through or anything like that, that you could see outside, then that needs to be closed up and sealed off as best as you can,” said Bowers.
Bowers says smaller homes typically see an extremely high jump during this time of year that’s attributed to poor insulation. If you’re feeling stressed about a high utility bill, JEA says the first step is to reach out to their customer service to discuss options.
“If you get a dramatic increase in your utility bill, and it’s going to pressure your budget, then call them and talk to them, let them know your situation, what the circumstances are, and then, they make every effort they can to accommodate that,” said Bowers.

From adjusting your thermostat just a few degrees to unplugging devices that still draw power even when they’re off, these simple steps could help lower your next bill without sacrificing comfort.
JEA encourages consumers to contact their customer service department at (731) 422-7500 for any questions and concerns regarding their monthly bill.
