Looking for retail deals? Now’s the time as peak seasons end

LEXINGTON, Tenn. — For small businesses and corporations alike, January sales tend to slow down. Even so, clearance deals are ramping up to make room for new merchandise.

After the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday season, Americans tend to avoid unnecessary spending. This shift often times leads to a decline in sales.

For small businesses like Davis’ Clothing, located at 562 West Church Street in Lexington, this drop can put them in a tough spot.

“We’ve had the peak months of November and December, and so, you have to do a good job of planning out January and February because you know it’s coming,” said Davis Small, owner of Davis’ Clothing.

David Small, owner of Davis Clothing, says they have braced for not only the expected sales decline, but tax payments as well.

“There’s a lot of taxes that are due in January, and you know, you’ve collected sales tax for the state,” said Small.

As post holiday shopping dries up, returns also gain in popularity. Small says he’s noticed many consumers are not spending more than they have to.

“People are conscious about what they’re spending, you know, other times. It’s more of a need basis spending than it is a want basis,” said Small.

In retail, many businesses are offering clearance deals to make room for new merchandise. If you’re looking for the best bang for your buck, now is the peak time.

“Right now, all of our clearance is 40% off. It started off at 25% off, now we’ve moved it to 40% off, and this is probably the best time to shop because there’s still some size selection,” said Small.

Small says even though winter is a slow retail season, they’re getting some relief with their working attire.

According to the National Federation of Independent Business, small business owners are expecting better business conditions for the new year. They expect costs pressures moderated, employment challenges eased, and capital investments to be picked up.
